In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, ‘The Congress Party’ emerged as the single biggest party. In 1999, she was chosen ‘Leader of the Opposition’ in the 13th Lok Sabha. She became a main member of the ‘Congress’ party at the ‘Calcutta Plenary Session’ in 1997, and the party’s leader in 1998. Rajiv Gandhi, although coming from a renowned political family, was uninterested in politics. She changed her identity to Sonia Gandhi and moved in with Indira Gandhi, the then-Indian Prime Minister. In a Hindu wedding, Antonia Maino married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968. Soon after, the pair fell in love and decided to marry. She met a young Indian called Rajiv Gandhi, a scion of the politically influential Nehru–Gandhi family, who was a mechanical engineering student at the ‘University of Cambridge,’ while working at the restaurant. To pay her expenses as a college student, she worked as a waiter at the ‘Varsity Restaurant’ in Cambridge, a Greek restaurant. In 20, she was named one of the “Time 100 most important persons in the world.” Since then, she has played a big role in Indian politics and is also regarded as a formidable force in international politics. However, the ‘Congress’s declining fortunes in the following years prompted her to become the main party member. She avoided politics throughout the early years of her marriage and steadfastly refused to do so even after her husband’s terrible murder in 1991. She married Rajiv Gandhi, a member of the politically influential Nehru–Gandhi family, who had long been involved with the ‘Indian National Congress,’ and moved to India. Since India’s independence in 1947, Sonia Gandhi has been the first foreign-born president of the ‘Congress’ party. She is also the chairman of the Lok Sabha’s ‘United Progressive Alliance,’ which she has held since 2004. In 2010, she was re-elected for a fourth time, making her the longest-serving president in the 125-year history of the ‘Congress’ party. Sonia Gandhi is an Indian politician born in Italy and has served as the president of the ‘Indian National Congress’ party since 1998.
